My grandmother makes a soup that everyone in our family enjoys. When I asked for the recipe, she said, "Some vegetables, a little water, and a good spoon of seasoning." That sounded simple, but I did not know the size of her spoon. We decided to cook together so I could write everything down.
Before she added anything, I measured it with a kitchen scale. I also took photos of the vegetables after she cut them. The cabbage pieces were larger than the pieces I usually made. She explained that small pieces became too soft while the other vegetables cooked.
Near the end, she tasted the soup and added more water. I left a space in my notebook for that final adjustment. The next weekend, I made the soup alone and sent her a picture. She asked how it tasted, rather than whether I had followed every number.
My notes helped me begin, but tasting helped me finish.
