Our apartment building has a shared washing line on the roof. In winter, only one part of it gets sunshine for most of the afternoon. Some neighbours leave their dry clothes there until late at night. Others cannot find space when they come home from work.
At a residents' meeting, we first suggested giving each flat a fixed day. But one neighbour works different days every week, and another washes clothes for a large family. A fixed day would not solve both problems. We agreed to try a simpler rule: move dry clothes to a basket beside the door.
Each flat now has its own labelled basket. No one needs to guess who owns a shirt or a towel. After two weeks, we checked whether the new rule was helping. There was still a busy hour on Sunday, but fewer people were waiting for space.
We decided to keep the baskets and talk again before summer.
