Last month, a notice at our community centre caught my attention. It invited people to bring broken things to a repair café on Sunday. I had an old desk lamp that no longer worked, so I took it along. A volunteer asked me when the problem had started and whether the lamp had fallen.

I expected him to open it immediately, but he listened to my answers first. Then he checked the cable and found damage near the plug. He explained that he could not safely repair it with the parts available that day. Instead of sending me away, he wrote down the part I needed.

He also gave me the name of a repair shop that could check the whole lamp. I left without a working lamp, but I understood the problem better. The following week, the shop repaired it, and I put it back on my desk. Now the light reminds me to ask questions before deciding that something is useless.
