When our neighbourhood received money for a new bench, choosing its location seemed easy. The square outside the station was busy, and several committee members suggested putting it there. They imagined commuters sitting down while waiting for friends after work. However, a resident who walked with a stick said she rarely needed a seat at the station.

She needed somewhere to rest halfway between her flat and the supermarket. That part of the route had a long slope and no shelter from the sun. Her comment changed the question from "Where will most people see it?" to "Where will it be most useful?" The committee spent a Saturday morning talking to people along the shopping route.

Parents with young children mentioned the same slope, as did people carrying heavy bags. A shop owner offered space beside his wall, where an awning provided some shade. Before making a final decision, the committee checked that a bench would leave enough room on the pavement. They installed it there for a trial period and invited further comments.

The bench was less visible than it would have been at the station, but it filled a gap in the walking route. A small decision had improved because someone described a need the original plan had missed.
