I needed a drill to put up a shelf, but buying one seemed unnecessary for a single afternoon's work. A friend told me about a neighbourhood tool library where residents could borrow equipment. The idea appealed to me because my cupboard was already full of things I rarely used. At the library, a volunteer asked what kind of wall I planned to work on.

I had not considered that question, and I could not answer it confidently. He suggested checking the building instructions before choosing a tool. He also showed me the borrowing agreement, which described return times and responsibility for damage. Sharing a tool did not mean that nobody had to look after it.

I went home, found the instructions, and discovered that I needed permission from the landlord. While waiting for a reply, I changed my plan and chose a shelf that stood on the floor. I returned to the library to borrow a smaller tool for assembling it instead. The visit had saved me from buying a drill I did not need, but it had also slowed down an unsafe decision.

For me, the most valuable part of the service was the conversation before the borrowing began.
