My recipe was for four people, but only two of us were eating at home that evening. I decided to make half the amount of vegetable soup. I used one onion instead of two and measured half the water. Then I took out the large pot I usually used for this recipe.
My sister suggested a smaller pot because there was much less soup this time. I checked the recipe again and noticed that I had also halved the cooking time. But the pieces of carrot were still the same size. They would not become soft simply because there were fewer of them.
We let the soup cook and checked a carrot with a fork. When it was soft, we tasted the soup before adding the final salt. There was enough for our two bowls, with a small portion left for tomorrow. I wrote "check the vegetables, not just the clock" beside the recipe.
