通知を減らした夜

I wanted to read for twenty minutes after dinner, but my phone kept lighting up.

夕食後に二十分読みたかったのですが、携帯の画面が何度も光りました。

Most messages were from a shopping app or a busy group chat.

ほとんどは買い物アプリや、やり取りの多いグループチャットからでした。

I checked each one, and soon my reading time was over.

一つずつ見ていると、すぐに読書の時間が終わりました。

The next evening, I decided to change my notification settings.

翌晩、通知の設定を変えることにしました。

I did not want to miss a call from my mother, who was travelling alone.

一人で旅行中の母からの電話は、見逃したくありませんでした。

So I kept calls on and turned off alerts from the shopping app.

そこで電話は受けられるようにし、買い物アプリの通知を止めました。

I muted the group chat until nine, when I usually checked messages.

グループチャットは、いつもメッセージを見る九時まで通知を止めました。

Then I put the phone on a shelf behind me and opened my book.

それから携帯を後ろの棚に置いて、本を開きました。

After a few pages, I wanted to look at the screen out of habit.

数ページ読むと、癖で画面を見たくなりました。

I made a small mark on my bookmark and kept reading instead.

代わりに、しおりに小さな印を付けて読み続けました。

At nine, there were messages waiting, but none needed an immediate answer.

九時にはメッセージがたまっていましたが、すぐ返事が必要なものはありませんでした。

My mother called later, and I heard the phone as usual.

その後、母が電話してきて、いつもどおり着信に気付きました。

I had not stopped all contact; I had chosen when to check most of it.

連絡を全部断ったのではなく、多くの連絡をいつ見るか決めたのでした。
