旅のおみやげを選ぶ

On the final afternoon of our trip, my sister and I visited a shop selling local crafts.

旅行の最後の午後、姉と私は地元の工芸品を売る店へ行きました。

I wanted to bring something home for a friend who had looked after my cat.

猫の世話をしてくれた友人に、おみやげを買いたかったのです。

A display near the entrance advertised a large decorative plate as the town's most popular souvenir.

入り口近くには、町で最も人気のおみやげとして大きな飾り皿が展示されていました。

Its colours were beautiful, and I nearly chose it without thinking further.

色が美しく、深く考えずに選びそうになりました。

My sister asked where my friend would put it in her small flat.

姉が、友人の小さな部屋のどこに置くのか尋ねました。

That reminded me that my friend preferred objects she could use rather than display.

それで、友人は飾るものより使えるものを好むと思い出しました。

We spoke to the shopkeeper, who showed us several small cups made in the same workshop.

店の人に相談すると、同じ工房で作られた小さなカップをいくつか見せてくれました。

He explained how the makers left slight differences in shape rather than making every cup identical.

作り手はすべてを同じ形にするのではなく、少しずつ違いを残すのだと説明しました。

I chose one that felt comfortable to hold and asked whether it was suitable for hot drinks.

持ちやすいものを一つ選び、温かい飲み物に使えるか確認しました。

The shopkeeper wrapped it carefully and included a card naming the workshop.

店の人は丁寧に包み、工房の名前を書いたカードを添えました。

Back home, my friend made tea in the cup while I told her about the trip.

帰宅後、旅行の話をする間、友人はそのカップでお茶を入れました。

She was interested in the workshop, but she was especially pleased that the cup fitted on her narrow shelf.

工房にも関心を持ちましたが、細い棚に収まることを特に喜びました。

A popular souvenir can be a good starting point, yet the person receiving it may have different needs.

人気のおみやげは選ぶ入口になりますが、受け取る人には別の希望があるかもしれません。

This time, remembering an ordinary habit helped me make a more personal choice.

今回は、普段の習慣を思い出したことで、相手に合うものを選べました。
